The spring period was very dry in many of the Russian forest areas. This initiated forest fires in March and April. A calm period followed, until the fires took off again last week. The unusually hot weather creates dangerous fire conditions.
It is probable that the fire situation won’t ease up any time soon. Russian plywood producers must take this into account in raw material procurement during the summer.
In Russia, winter has traditionally been the main logging season. The soil should be frozen for the harvesters and log trucks to enter. At the same time, there aren’t enough forest roads to enable summer time logging.
The forest fires exacerbate the seasonal impact even more. Segezha has taken some measures supporting the forest fire fighters in the company’s leased forests.
