Estonian plywood production scaling up

In Estonia, the plywood industry has seen tremendous growth during the 2010s. Today, plywood is being produced in four locations. Until 2016, only UPM’s Otepää mill was producing plywood in industrial quantities. Since then, three new plywood production units have been established. As the Estonian population is only 1.3 million in size, almost all plywood is exported. The export volumes in the graph below include some imported Russian plywood, which is sold on to other markets.

The UPM Otepää mill was established in 2000. Otepää was expanded and modernised in 2008 and 2016. In 2016, Latvijas Finieris started producing plywood in Kohila. Two years later, MetsäWood followed in Pärnu. Estonian Plywood AS started production in Jõgeva county at the end of 2019.

The current annual plywood production capacities are:

UPM Otepää 90 000 m3
Kohila Vineer (Latvijas Finieris) 45 000 m3
MetsäWood Pärnu 50 000 m3
Estonian Plywood 55 000 m3
